Lagoon Tour (Canoeing, exploring local fishing methods, village seafood lunch)

Guests visiting Nasivanthivu will be in for a nice treat, as they can go on a lagoon tour and check out the amazing scenery filled with mangroves, marshes and little islands close by. Amongst the many tourist places in Batticaloa, is Nasivanthivu which is located north of Batticaloa and is 14kms away from Passikudah. Guests on this tour will be able to experience a canoeing session and get to learn about local fishing methods. This location is famous for oysters and clams and the lagoon is known as a rich habitat for these types of shellfish and is an important source of income for the local fishing community. The canoe ride will also give guests an opportunity to see some of the most vibrant mangrove clusters that Batticaloa is also famous for. Guests aboard the canoes will also be able to get the rare experience of tasting fresh oysters straight from the lagoon.

The fishing community will include views of local women collecting clams from the lagoon along with other traditional fishing methods used to catch fish, crabs and prawns. These traditional fishing methods includes using traps, scoop nets, hand picking and fishing nets for instance. Apart from oysters, guests can also have the catch of the day prepared for their lunch. At the end of the lagoon tour, guests will be taken to one of the islands in the vicinity where their catch will be prepared for their lunch by the women villagers.

A traditional village-style lunch consisting of the seafood with rice and curry will be served in the outdoors and guests can find themselves enjoying the authentic tastes of a village-style seafood meal. The ideal season to go and experience this lagoon tour in Batticaloa is between March and September.
